Samsung this morning, in a not so surprising move, released it's newest Apple inspired creation the Glaxy s3 mini. This phone is confirmation the apple's design team is superior not just aesthetically, but also from a technical perspective.
A Samsung spokesperson was quoted today by Cnet as saying "(the s3 mini is the) optimal choice for consumers who are looking for more practical smartphone." A MORE PRACTICAL SMARTPHONE. For years, and most recently at the iPhone5 unveiling - Apple has explained the reason that they design phones that you can hold with one hand is because... people like to hold their phone with just one hand. The design of this new galaxy, and confirmed by Samsung's PR, shows that Apple is right in saying phones that are tablet sized are impractical at phones. This is a clear admission by Samsung that from a usability standpoint, Apple has been right all along.
From a more technical standpoint, the s3 Mini also makes the iPhone5 shine. During the iPhone5 unveiling, a decent amount of time was spent explaining that Apple could obviously add phone functionality to what's essentially a small flat screen TV - as their competitors are fond to do. Making a powerful phone in to something phone sized is actually a lot more difficult than just making it huge.
When compared to an iPhone5 the s3 mini has a lower resolution, lower quality display. The s3 mini runs a slower, static CPU. The s3's camera is 5mp vs. the iphone5's 8 (s3 mini has a much lower spec'd camera than even last years' iphone 4s). The s3 mini has a much lower quality, plain vga front facing camera - the iphone5 has an HD front camera. iPhone5 builds have higher memory capacities. The list goes on and on...
Essentially the s3 mini is proof that the iPhone5 leads the way in terms of usability (even according to Samsung), and that Apple's design department is also superior to Samsung from a technology standpoint. Oh, and the iPhone5 isn't made from cheap plastic.
This is an interesting turn of events. Especially because they've been reliant on their large displays for a while now!
ReplyDeleteHow is this copying Apple at all? You do know that Samsung makes devices in all price ranges/brackets right? This isn't a high end device, so it doesn't have high end components. This isn't trying to compete with the iPhone. If anything, they're making fun of Apple, by saying 4 inch screens only belong on low end devices. Apart from the larger screened flagships, Samsung has always been making smartphones with small screen for other price ranges, I don't see how that is copying Apple.
ReplyDeletePlease Jack. Are you serious? So you're saying the 'Galaxy' line doesn't represent Samsung's flagship products? Let's face it man - Samsung is acknowledging 4 inch is the optimal screen size - they just blow at making them.
