Show me yours and I'll show you mine...
So I'm conviced, my girlfriend will never fully understand. "When are you going to throw out those boxes?" "NEVER" I retort in maniacal laughter. There are few guilty pleasures that I have. One though, are my collections of items involving my interest. Whether it be the nerdy video game figurine collection, or the Disney vinyl figure collection, they all have a very real connection to the things I'm passionate about. I guess that is the purpose of collectibles afterall. These collections make up who I am. One thing I like to collect is Apple stuff. I collect Apple stuff because of my passion of their products and the company and it's history. I have everything from a framed Frank Sinatra "Think Different" picture, to a Powermac G4 fabric banner. I have a non-working Poweremac G5 simply because it was my first Mac I'd ever owned. My collection pales in comparison to anything that would be constituted as a real collection, but that's ok because it is for me andno one else.
One catagorization of items, the one in reference to my girlfriends lack of understanding, are the boxes I keep of current and retired products. I don't have every box of every device I've ever owned, but I have a few. For me, all modern Apple products have an expiration date. This date is the date that new products are announced. At that point I tend to sell off the old to make room (on my shelf, and in my bank account) for the new. The memoborbillia of what is left behind, that little keepsake, are the boxes. The reminder of the first time I opened it up and held whatever "it" was in my hand. Even though, my products have long since departed, their memories remain.
So next time my girlfriend ask, "When are you going to get rid of those boxes?" My response will simply be "When you throw out your shoes!" Because these boxes represent my identity just as much as her taste in shoes represents hers...all hundred or so pairs.
